Cory calls it Kinkos with a soul. Ill buy that. Kinkos is short on soul and Cory has soul to spare. But do people pick a print shop based on soul? Apparently, no. They dont Corys bombing. Heres his story. About two-and-a-half years ago, Corys job got down-sized and he lit out into the world of entrepreneurialism. Years before, hed worked for FedEx, so he had mailing and shipping experience. He saw a strip mall going up in a commercial/industrial part of town right next to a Costco. A well-healed partner swooped down to seal the deal: a print shop next to Costco. They both thought itd work. The partner dropped a wad of cash on the biz and they rented a brand new space. They figured that they could spend a little extra on rent because being next to Costco was advertising enough. Mail and Ink was born. Today, Cory works harder than when he had a job-job and he makes less money. Far less money. Hes tried a couple of things in addition to copying. He offers print cartridge recycling. He makes huge life-size stickers of your kid in his football uniform to slap on his wall. Neither of those have made much of a difference in his bottom line. Whys Cory biting it? My opinion: the partners money screwed Cory from the very start. Too much money too soon will sink most businesses. Corys the poster child.
